Smoke and Mirrors: Ultra-Rapid-Scan FT-IR
Spectrometry
The resulting spectrum has a SNR of over 1000:1 by the RMS method. The
mirror was stuck to an aluminum rotor mounted on an obsolete 40-megabyte disk-drive
spindle, and the rotation was driven by a rubber band. Because the rotating assembly was
unbalanced and the disk-drive spindle was flexible, the mirror was vibrating as well as
rotating.
